Parent or Grandparent Sponsorship

Parent or Grandparent Sponsorship

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents outside Quebec to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents for Canadian permanent residency.

The federal government’s immigration levels plan presently aims for an annual intake of 23,500 new permanent residents under the PGP.

Parents and grandparents program process

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) process is administered by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) through a lottery system.

Citizens and permanent residents are required to submit an interest to sponsor form, placing them in a pool. IRCC conducts random draws from the pool and issues Invitations to apply.

Once invited, sponsors and their parents or grandparents have 60 days to submit a comprehensive application.

Eligibility criteria for sponsoring parents or grandparents:

To be eligible as sponsors, individuals must:

Additional requirements include:

A commitment to financially support the parent or grandparent for 20 years from the date of approval for permanent residence.

Obligation to reimburse the government for any social assistance provided to the parent or grandparent during that period.

Parents and Grandparents Program: Eligible Sponsored Individuals

Canadian citizens and permanent residents have the opportunity to sponsor their own parents and grandparents, whether related by blood or adoption. In situations involving divorce or separation, the spouses or common-law partners of parents and grandparents are also eligible for sponsorship. Siblings or half-siblings of the sponsor are eligible only if they meet the criteria as dependent children. Provided the financial requirements are fulfilled, it is possible for more than one person or couple to act as sponsors.

Parents and Grandparents Super Visa: Alternative Option

For individuals who may not have succeeded in the PGP process, the Parents and Grandparents Super Visa stands as a viable alternative. This unique visa enables a parent or grandparent to visit Canada for a period of upto five years at a time. Notably, the super visa boasts the advantage of facilitating multiple entries over a span of up to 10 years.
